Western Australia's tourism sector continues to break records with 11 million overnight and 29.1 million daytrip visitors spending $19.2 billion across the State in 2025.

The new visitor data from Tourism Research Australia shows Western Australia's tourism performance accelerated in all areas in the year ending December 2025, particularly through strong international visitor growth, with 1.1 million international visitors - the highest international visitor number ever recorded in WA - spending $3.4 billion.

Eight of Western Australia's top 10 international markets recorded year-on-year growth in 2025, boosted by new and expanded aviation routes supported by the Cook Government through Tourism WA.

The increase was led by the United Kingdom which remains Western Australia's top international market by visitor numbers, with 163,000 visitors spending $414 million, representing a 38 per cent increase in visitors and a 73 per cent increase in spend compared to 2024.

China continues to cement its position as Western Australia's largest market by visitor spend, increasing 66 per cent on 2024 to deliver $503 million in visitor spend last year. The Cook Government is this week leading a tourism and trade mission to China to strengthen aviation connectivity, grow inbound visitation and deepen partnerships with this valuable visitor market.

Other markets that recorded a surge included France, where the number of visitors grew by 80 per cent - a 68 per cent increase in visitor spend - and Japan, which saw an 85 per cent increase in visitor spend, climbing from WA's 10th biggest visitor market by spend, to the State's fourth largest market. Both markets are supported by established direct flights from Paris and Tokyo into Perth.

The international visitor boost comes amid record numbers of interstate visitors travelling to WA, up 11 per cent to 1.2 million visitors in 2025, and significant volumes of WA residents travelling within the State despite record outbound travel across the country.

Other results delivered include:

  • $6 billion spent by visitors in regional WA;
  • around 23 per cent more visitors and 30 per cent more visitor spend than 2024;
  • WA remains the only State or Territory to exceed pre-COVID international visitor volumes, with the national average five per cent behind their 2019 international visitor numbers;
  • 1.2 million interstate overnight visitors, the largest number of interstate trips to WA in a 12-month period since 2019;
  • The number of interstate visitors to WA grew by 11 per cent in 2025, well ahead of the five per cent national growth, and they contributed a collective $3.3 billion in visitor spend;
  • 8.7 million intrastate overnight visitors, up one per cent on 2024, who spent $7.9 billion - making WA one of only two States to achieve growth of intrastate visitors; and
  • 29.1 million daytrip visitors, up nine per cent on 2024, who spent $4.6 billion.

The ongoing growth of Western Australia's visitor economy in 2025 was driven by major events, including WWE: Crown Jewel, the Bledisloe Cup, and the Ashes West Test; booking drivers like the WA Dream Sale and Broome Season Pass; and increased cruise ship arrivals such as the Scenic Eclipse and Crown Princess.

Western Australia's robust tourism sector demonstrates the Cook Government's success in delivering on its economic diversification strategy, supporting local jobs and businesses.

Tourism is the State's fifth largest employer, supporting more than 120,000 tourism filled jobs in 2023-24 and over 30,000 tourism and hospitality business across WA.

"This new visitor data shows that Western Australia's tourism sector continues to go from strength to strength, contributing $19.2 billion in 2025 to WA's powerhouse economy.

"Through the Cook Government's economic diversification strategy, we've identified tourism as a key sector that creates jobs and supports local businesses across the State, and it's fantastic to see these figures reaffirm the return on our investment into tourism's success.

"The work doesn't stop here though - we're committed to driving these results even higher by continuing to add drawcard events to our blockbuster calendar of major events; establishing new aviation services; showcasing WA to the world through the newest chapter of our tourism brand, Walking On A Dream; and attracting new investment to increase the supply and quality of our tourism experiences, accommodation and attractions."
