Improved traffic movement through Maylands is another step closer with a construction contract awarded to Advanteering Civil Engineers for major upgrades to the Hotham Street Bridge.

The $4.6 million project will see traffic signals installed and a new right-turn onto Whatley Crescent made available. Currently, road users can only turn left off Hotham Bridge onto Whatley Crescent.

The project will also deliver upgrades to lighting, bridge barriers and line-marking.

While the footpath will be removed from the bridge to make room for these critical road improvements, pedestrians will continue to be able to cross the railway using the nearby pedestrian overpass or level crossing at Meltham Station.

The Hotham Bridge upgrades form part of the Maylands Road Improvements package, funded by the State Government to support the 2022 closure of Caledonian Avenue Level Crossing.

Construction on the Hotham Street Bridge upgrades will commence in early 2024.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Since the decision was made to close the Caledonian Avenue Level Crossing, Main Roads has been working with the local community and stakeholders to develop a masterplan for local road, path and streetscape upgrades in the Maylands town centre.

"Providing a right-turn from Hotham Bridge to Whatley Crescent was a top priority for the local community, especially business owners, to boost access to the popular business, retail and hospitality precinct.

"Historically, road users have only been able to turn left off this bridge and take a convoluted route via Guildford Road to reach the Maylands town centre. This will make access to the area much easier and ensure it continues to thrive."

Comments attributed to Maylands MLA Lisa Baker:

"The upgrades to the Hotham Street Bridge are an important measure to improve traffic movement throughout Maylands and also to support small business in our community.

"It's fantastic to see this contract awarded and I look forward to works getting underway early next year."
