Spectator behaviour, club mental health and well-being and retention of teenagers in sport will be the key issues discussed today at the ninth annual Peel Sports Forum.

More than 100 key sports industry representatives in the Peel and South-West will convene to discuss these and other issues facing the sport industry.

Minister for Sport and Recreation David Templeman will officially open the event that has attracted representatives from State Sporting Associations, local governments, club administrations, and volunteers.

Guest speakers include veteran Hockeyroo Rachel Lynch, Executive Manager Game Development and Community Football for the Western Australian Football Commission Troy Kirkham, sports commentator and modern-day poet Mick Colliss, and Jodii Maguire Director of Think! Performance Psychology.

The forum provides a platform for delegates to exchange ideas, share best practices, and strengthen partnerships that will drive the future of sport and recreation delivery in the Peel and South-West.

The State Government has supported sport delivery and participation with several recent investment opportunities, including:

  • $4.9 million to continue the Regional Athlete Support Program to help talented regionally-based athletes meet their full potential;
  • An additional $7.5 million annually over the next two years for community sport and recreation facilities throughout WA; and
  • $440,000 to help SportWest develop an initiative that invests in the future of the WA sport sector.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

"Sport and recreation is a growing industry, with sport delivery and participation constantly evolving.

"Forums like these allow our key sports representatives to leverage the good work being done across the industry, to share best practice approaches, hear fresh perspectives from industry experts, and strengthen partnerships that will help them to develop the appropriate supports and structures that will enable the industry to thrive."
