Western Australia's chances of producing more world-ranked tennis players will be enhanced by the completion of the new State Tennis Centre at Burswood, Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore said.

Mr Moore was commenting while presenting a $1 million cheque to Tennis West as part of the State Government's $3.6 million commitment to the project.

Stage one of the $5.1 million project is on schedule for completion in five months.

When finished, the Tennis Centre will provide WA with a much-needed all-weather facility which includes 13 courts, changeroom facilities, spectator seating and an administrative centre.

"For many years, leading tennis coaches have been adamant that WA would not develop the potential of its young tennis players without a centre which provided internationally accepted hard courts," Mr Moore said.

"Tennis West has long backed this philosophy and has worked hard to gain a centre that will give our promising young players facilities that are compatible with those they encounter on the international circuit.

"The new centre will also strengthen WA's chances of attracting the world's best players and major tournaments to Perth, thus providing economic and recreational benefits to the State.

"Importantly, the centre will be available to all the people of WA for social tennis."
