$1m in funds allocated to 63 projects across the State
3/8/99
The $1 million in funds from the Community Facilities Grants Program have been allocated to 63 projects across the State.
Announcing the successful applicants today, Local Government Minister Paul Omodei said there had been 176 applications for funds.
They had been assessed by a committee which consisted of representatives of the Department of Local Government, the Disability Services Commission, the WA Tourism Commission and the WA Municipal Association.
He had accepted the committee's recommendations.
This was the third year of a $4 million, four-year program to improve facilities such as public toilets, change rooms for mothers, rest areas, playgrounds and tourist information for local communities and the travelling public.
Preference was given to projects accessible to people with disabilities.
Of this year's grants, 43 had gone to local governments, 19 to community organisations and one to the BP Roadhouse at Wubin to provide disabled access toilets.
Grants had ranged from the maximum of $25,000 to $2,140.
From the outset there had been a strong preference for non-metropolitan projects, but this year for the first time some grants had gone to metropolitan councils.
These included the Mundaring Shire and Rotary Club, the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Tumbulgum Farm in that shire, the City of Rockingham and the Singleton Progress Association.
