$20,000 grant for Midland Central Mainstreet Program
3/3/99
Regional Development Minister Hendy Cowan has presented a $20,000 cheque to the Midland Central (Open for Business) Mainstreet Program to help revitalise the town's central business district.
Mr Cowan said the Midland community was planning to undertake a range of projects to further develop the central business area. The grant would help fund a Mainstreet co-ordinator to bring the various initiatives together.
The State funds have been matched by a $20,000 commitment from the Shire of Swan and $20,000 from the local business community.
Some of the planned initiatives include developing:
- a customer loyalty program;
- a community logo for the Midland Mainstreet Program;
- a promotional package for the Midland CBD;
- a town square and vistas through the town centre;
- attractive entry statements and signage;
- a business plan and package of incentives to attract new businesses to Midland;
- better CBD road access; and -
- multi-level carparking.
"These are all strong proposals which show a real commitment to improving the central business district," Mr Cowan said.
"Everyone from local businesses, to local government to residents, has got behind the project, which augurs very well for the future of Midland. It has become a real community endeavour.
"As well as the substantial cash contributions from the Shire and local businesses, the Midland and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has donated office space and administrative support, while local businesses are providing office equipment and furniture for the new co-ordinator."
Project Mainstreet is a State Government initiative, co-ordinated by the Department of Commerce and Trade. The program aims to help communities stimulate local economic activity and enhance their commercial business district. Nineteen communities have been funded since the program commenced in 1992.
