A major information service aimed at helping school leavers and adults build on their skills or start a new career will be available throughout January, Employment and Training Minister Graham Kierath said today.

"CareerOne information service can match a person's interests and capabilities with available opportunities in training, employment or education," Mr Kierath said.

The service is co-ordinated by the WA Training Information Centre - Access All Areas and will run until January 29.

CareerOne centres have been set up throughout the metropolitan area and regional centres across the State.

A CareerOne brochure explaining the service and listing all the centres has been distributed to all Year 12 school leavers with their final results.

"CareerOne staff at each site can provide advice about a wide range of options available," Mr Kierath said.

"It could be advice on changing preferences and submitting late applications for full-time TAFE and university courses, for example, or apprenticeships, traineeships and other employment programs."

Mr Kierath said staff could also offer advice on various upper school and 'catch-up' programs for those students wishing to improve their academic standing in order to gain entry to TAFE or university in 2000.

"The Western Australian Department of Training and the Education Department have joined forces to provide a fast, efficient information service," he said.

CareerOne was initially set up to support the State's 20,000 school leavers. Over time demand for the service grew and the majority of inquiries received came from non-school leavers.

In January 1998 CareerOne staff handled 53,060 inquiries State-wide over the four weeks.

More than 4,000 people were given appointments for more in-depth consultation.

"About 75 per cent of those using the service were non-school leavers," Mr Kierath said.

Through CareerOne people can access information on all aspects of education, training and employment including:

·      full-time and part-time courses at TAFE;

·      repeating Year 12 and other secondary level courses provided through the Education Department;

·      training for a change of career; and -

·      entry and bridging courses, summer school classes and Adult Community Education classes at TAFE campuses.
