Yanchep will have a new, high technology wastewater treatment plant to service the 2,400 strong community within nine months, Water Resources Minister Dr Kim Hames said today.
Dr Hames said that BGC Hydrotechnics would begin work in February on the system.
Known as an Intermittent Decanted Extended Aeration (IDEA) plant, it is expected to be operational in September. The contract won by the company, which is a member of BGC (Australia) Pty Ltd, is for design, establishment and commissioning of an almost $1 million project.
Dr Hames said the Water Corporation would take over the plant following a 20-week settling in period.
"The corporation operates several similar IDEA plants in various parts of Western Australia," he said.
"The plants incorporate the very latest in wastewater treatment technology, are environmentally sound and cost-effective.
"It's very pleasing that the Yanchep community is now able to join other communities with a treatment system such as this."
Dr Hames said that while the plant would have the capacity to meet the needs of a community of 6,000 people, eventually it would be replaced by the proposed regional wastewater treatment plant proposed for Alkimos, north of the town.
