Aboriginal-owned company to build homes in Kalgoorlie-Boulder area
28/5/95
Housing Minister Kevin Prince today announced Homeswest had awarded three contracts to an Aboriginal-owned company to build houses in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area.
Yawony Building Company will build three houses and four units worth a total of more than $500,000.
The three houses will be built in Gailbraith, McLeery and Gouge Streets, Kalgoorlie and the four singles units will be constructed in Taylor Way, Boulder.
Mr Prince said Yawony Building Company won the tender for the contracts, having successfully completed work for Homeswest in the past.
Yawony manager John Hansen said the company used Aboriginal trainees wherever possible and had completed work for Homeswest in areas as varied as Fitzroy Crossing and Bunbury.
"The company takes great pride in its Aboriginal origins," Mr Hansen said.
"We have a wide range of employees from different backgrounds.
"Yawony is derived from the first two letters of three of the major Aboriginal groups in Western Australia - Yamatji, Wongi and Nyoongar."
