Agriculture Western Australia development officer Richard Olive broadened his knowledge of Agriculture during his two weeks of work experience in the office of the Minister for Primary Industry and Fisheries Monty House.
Approximately 20 graduates were employed through Agriculture WA's Graduate Recruitment Program this year.
The aim of this program is to attract highly skilled persons into the agriculture industry to ensure its continued progression as the second largest industry sector, generating $4.7 billion to the State's economy.
The Graduate Recruitment Program targets graduates from all educational disciplines ranging from marketing to natural resource management. The Minister said he was enthusiastic about allowing the graduates to work in his office.
"During their placement, graduates discover how decisions are made at the higher level of the agriculture and fisheries industries and also find out how State Parliament works in respect to legislation," Mr House said.
"The work experience is invaluable training and an enjoyable experience for my staff and the graduate."
After pursuing a foreign language teaching career, Mr Olive completed an Environmental Science Degree at Murdoch University. He also has a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Diploma in Education.
Mr Olive has travelled extensively to Spain and Europe gaining professional experience in social and cultural development.
He is currently based at the Geraldton District Office.
While having a city upbringing, Mr Olive has had a keen interest in agriculture. His work experience on a dairy farm gave him the motivation to follow the agriculture career path.
On completion of his work experience, Mr Olive said he would have a clearer understanding of the Minister's role in agriculture and the political arena.
The Minister said that Agriculture WA would continue to encourage highly skilled professionals to pursue a career in the agricultural sector.
