An Albany firm has won a $635,700 contract to provide site works for the first stage of the Lockyer redevelopment, Housing Minister Kevin Prince announced today.

Mr Prince said Albany Industrial Services submitted the lowest of five tenders for the work, which encompasses earthworks, sewerage, drainage, roadworks, water reticulation and underground power.

The Minister said he was delighted that a local firm won the tender.

"Homeswest received five tenders which ranged from Albany Industrial Services' low of $635,700 through to an unsuccessful bid of $1,144,975," Mr Prince said.

The Minister said the winning tenderer had successfully completed a number of subdivisions in the Albany area in recent years and was currently involved in contracts to subdivide 42 lots in Albany and Denmark and to provide roadworks to rural areas.

He said the company had the resources required to complete the contract, and a reputation for work of a high standard.

Stage One of the Lockyer redevelopment would create a 40 lot subdivision, providing competitively priced land close to the Albany town centre.

"Homeswest will offer lots to home buyers in mid-1995 and will build modern rental houses on selected sites," Mr Prince said.

"The subdivision will create a range of lots with underground power, fronting on to a new road.  A fence will be erected along Hanrahan Road to provide privacy and safety for residents.

"Special attention has been paid to traffic calming, with a new roundabout to be constructed at the corner of Banks and Priess Streets.

"Drummond Street will become a cul-de-sac at Banks Street to slow traffic in the suburb and the existing drainage system will be progressively upgraded and piped underground to eliminate the dangers of open drainage."

The Minister said the area's long standing drainage problem, which caused blocks to flood in winter, would be addressed by the work.
