Amendments to Broome town planning scheme approved
8/10/94
Planning Minister Richard Lewis today approved amendments to the Broome town planning scheme which would pave the way for the development of two new shopping centres in the town.
Mr Lewis said the two shopping centres - one on airport land on Frederick Street and the other in Chinatown - would provide a great boost to the town.
The Minister said there had been overwhelming community support for the new centre on the airport land.
"During the advertising of the Frederick Street proposal, there were more than 1000 submissions in favour of the new shopping centre," he said.
"I have agreed to the rezoning of the land on the condition that the Broome council ensures than an agreement is reached with the airport owners to relocate the airport as soon as possible.
"There is also a condition that an overall development plan should be prepared prior to further major development proposals being approved within the airport land."
In regards to the Chinatown centre, Mr Lewis said he supported Council's initiatives in undertaking a detailed assessment of the area to provide a framework for its orderly development.
"Broome's Chinatown area is a unique cultural and tourist asset to the Kimberley and all steps should be taken to protect it," he said.
