Announcement of $512,000 investment in the Arts
11/7/99
Arts Minister Peter Foss today announced the outcome of the latest round of State Government investments in the arts totalling $512,000.
Eighty four applications were recommended for State Government support by ArtsWA's three peer assessment panels:
Aboriginal Arts Panel $85,000 (14 applications supported)
Young People and the Arts Panel $42,000 (11 applications supported)
Arts Development Panel $385,000 (59 applications supported)
The Minister said that the investments pointed to the growing diversity and excellence of arts practise in Western Australia.
"Although many of the Government's regional and community arts funds have been devolved to Country Arts WA and the Community Arts Network, it's also pleasing to see that projects occurring outside of the metropolitan area continue to receive strong support," Mr Foss said.
"Centres such as Albany, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie/Boulder, the Kimberley, Murray Districts and Moore River have all had funds awarded for projects that will engage these communities in a very direct way.
"I'm also delighted that the panels have supported an excellent range of research and development proposals, including the production of new theatre, music and dance works, as well as new visual arts and craft works and literature.
"I would like to thank the panel members for their significant contribution to the assessment process. This is the final round they will assess before new panel members are appointed for the next two-year term. Panel members have the difficult task of assessing many quality applications.
"This round was particularly competitive with 159 applications submitted for a total of approximately $1.6 million.
"The Government invests in the arts because the arts add meaning and value to the lives of countless Western Australians.
"I believe this latest round of investments in arts projects reflects both the range and quality of the arts in this State, and the interest in the arts held by the people of WA."
