Racing and Gaming Minister Evans today welcomed the announcement of $75 million expansion plans for the Burswood International Resort Casino.
Mr Evans said that Cabinet had endorsed his consent for Burswood's expansion plans.
The extension of the convention facilities would enable Perth to host mid-level conventions of up to 1,800 delegates, an important segment of the convention market.
There would also be extensions on the eastern side of the casino, but there would be no increase in the size of the gaming floor.
The extensions would allow the reorganisation of the gaming floor, but any change in the number and layout of tables and gaming machines would be determined by the Gaming Commission based on surveillance and security requirements.
The extensions would include smoking rooms, with the result that the main gaming floor would become smoke free when the work was completed in
mid-2001.
Any increase in gaming was expected to result mainly from increased use of the convention and entertainment facilities.
