Announcement that New Year revelers would have free public transport at certain times
19/10/99
Transport Minister Murray Criddle today announced that New Year revelers would be able to travel home free of charge on public transport between the hours of midnight and 6 am after celebrating the arrival of the new millennium.
"Free travel will be available not only for people celebrating New Year's eve but will be repeated from midnight to 6am the following day (January 2, 2000)," Mr Criddle said.
"We realise that the coming New Year festivities are likely to be celebrated by more people than ever before and that the revelry could well continue over a two day period.
"For this reason, we have decided to make it easier for people to get home after the various events and functions.
"We won't be collecting fares on the trains or buses between the hours of midnight and 6 am on either of the two days and hope this encourages people to use public transport."
Mr Criddle said that all public transport services would be running over the New Year weekend and today's announcement of free fares should give everybody the opportunity to plan well ahead - and where possible leave their vehicles at home.
