    Arts Minister Peter Foss has today welcomed the announcement of Dr Gary Morgan as the new executive director of the Western Australian Museum.
    Museum Board chair Dr Ken Michael and Ministry for Culture and the Arts Director General Ricky Burges announced today that Dr Gary Morgan, Associate Director Australian Museum Sydney, was the recommended candidate for the position.
    Mr Foss said Dr Morgan, who holds a PhD in zoology, was well qualified for the job.
    "Dr Morgan has been associate director of the Australian Museum Sydney since August 1997 and was acting director for five months," the Minister said.
    "In his current position he oversees six divisions, about $6 million recurrent expenditure and more than $1 million capital expenditure and a scientific staff of about 100.
    "He has worked for the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, where he was director of museum resources for more than one year.
    "Dr Morgan worked for the Western Australian Museum between July 1985 and July 1992, where he held the positions of curator of crustacea and worms and head of department, aquatic invertebrates."
    Dr Morgan, aged 42, studied at the University of Queensland and Monash University in Melbourne.
    The normal public service appeal period applies to this position. Appeals close on December 3.
