Western Australia's Olympic Harmony Ribbon program took a step forward today with the addition of the signature of South African racial equality campaigner Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Australia's Foreign Minister Alexander Downer presented the section of ribbon with Archbishop Tutu's signature to Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Minister Mike Board before signing the ribbon himself.

"We are indeed honoured to have the signature of Archbishop Tutu," Mr Board said.

"It is his personal endorsement of WA's Living In Harmony program.

"It is also an honour to have the ribbon signed by Mr Downer. His role in promoting Australia's interests overseas is bolstered by his firm stance on cultural harmony within the country."

The giant orange ribbon, a symbol of WA's commitment to cultural diversity, will be strung around Sydney's Olympic Stadium at Homebush in 2000.

The South African connection was made when Living In Harmony supporters, the Fremantle Dockers, took the ribbon to South Africa with them on a pre-season trip earlier this year. The signing of the ribbon by Archbishop Tutu was facilitated by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Other signatories to the ribbon include WA community leaders, including the Governor, members of Parliament, the Commissioner of Police and others.

The length of signed ribbon has already exceeded one kilometre, with even more Western Australians and international visitors expected to sign it in the next two years. 1-592 138
