More than 100 Western Australian arts and crafts makers will be displaying their work at an event that is rapidly becoming the State's top exhibition of arts and crafts.

Artcraft Expo '95 will take place next April following the success of this year's inaugural expo.

"The State Government is keen to expand on the success of Artcraft Expo '94," Commerce and Trade Minister Hendy Cowan said today.

"It is important to help raise the profile of the work being done around the State to help diversify our traditional economic base and generate new opportunities.

"After this year's event, the Department of Commerce and Trade developed the 'Marketing and Business Manual for Success in Arts and Crafts', as well as a two-day training workshop and an arts and crafts industry database.

"These projects were developed by the department's Cottage Industries Program. The department is now also providing assistance through the NIES-Better Business Program."

Mr Cowan said people taking part in next year's event at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal at Fremantle would have the opportunity to improve their business skills through dealing with potential customers and suppliers, agents and retailers.  He urged craftspeople to take part in the expo.

"This year's event attracted more than 8,000 visitors, and we expect more next time.  They will be able to buy a big range of superb art and craft goods, and watch demonstrations and 'how to' workshops," he said.

"The quality and range of works featured at the event will surprise many people.  They will include clay, fine wood crafts, paintings, sculptures, textiles and clothing, jewellery, photography and glass items."
