Attorney General forwarded final Christian Brothers' report
24/10/94
Attorney General Cheryl Edwardes today forwarded the final report of the Independent Advisory Panel to Assist Former Residents of Christian Brothers' Childcare Institutions to the Western Australian Solicitor General for consideration.
"The Government will make its response to the report after it has been examined by the Solicitor General and his advice has been received and considered," Mrs Edwardes said.
"I have read and noted the report and it is important all issues be considered by the Solicitor General before the Government publicly comments on the report's recommendations.
"I have also forwarded a copy to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
"The allegations regarding the behaviour of Christian Brothers in the forties and fifties are of a deep and serious nature and have been of concern to the Government for some time.
"It is important under the circumstances the correct and appropriate action be taken by the Government.
"Already there are current court proceedings relating to the allegations underway and the Government is mindful of this.
"A class action in the New South Wales Supreme Court, involving 240 alleged victims of Christian Brothers' abuse, has already begun.
"The plaintiffs include victims alleging that the wrongful activities occurred in WA.
"The WA Government does not condone sexual offences and abuse in any circumstances."
