BGC Contracting wins contract to construct Mt Magnet-Sandstone Road
17/6/99
Transport Minister Murray Criddle announced today that a Main Roads contract to construct and primerseal 51.1km of the Mt Magnet - Sandstone Road from the Mount Magnet townsite to Youanmi Road had been awarded to BGC Contracting.
He said work on the $12.1 million project was expected to commence in July and be completed by December 1999.
The new road will be constructed on a combination of the existing gravel road and some new alignment which would reduce the length of the road by approximately 3.5km .
Mr Criddle said the contract was part of the State Government's TransformWA commitment to seal the road between the towns of Mount Magnet and Leinster.
"The section sealed under this contract forms part of the link to the new vanadium mine at Windimurra which is scheduled to be opened in December 1999," Mr Criddle said.
"The road will also service the existing pastoral industry, provide new opportunities for the tourism industry and provide a high quality east-west freight link for the mid-west and east Murchison mining province.
"The sealing of the road between Mt Magnet and Leinster has an estimated construction cost of $95 million," he said.
The Mt Magnet-Leinster road forms an important transport link between shipping facilities at Geraldton and the east Murchison mineral province which produces more than $600 million in gross revenue for Western Australia each year.
