Boyanup's new community centre will become the focal point of the area, Family and Children's Services Minister June van de Klashorst said at the official opening of the facility today. The $870,000 Jack and Mary Kitchen Community Centre has been funded by the State Government, Shire of Capel and Lotteries Commission with the facility owned and operated by the shire. Mrs van de Klashorst said the centre would be used by the Boyanup Playgroup Association, the Boyanup Public Library, Boyanup Toy Library, Community Health Services, Boyanup Playgroup Association, Family and Children's Services and other local organisations. "The increased collaboration from having key agencies sharing the same building can only improve the quality of services delivered to the community," she said. "Centres such as this are particularly important in country towns as they are a meeting place and help breakdown the isolation felt by many, particularly young parents, living in outlying areas. "The other pleasing thing is that this centre has only come about through the determination, enthusiasm and commitment of the community." The Minister said it was fitting that the centre had been named after Jack and Mary Kitchen, who had worked tirelessly for the Capel community over many years. She said Jack had been a councillor with the Shire of Capel since 1959 and both he and Mary had formed and supported many community groups over the years. Media contact: Owen Cole 9481 7810
