A Main Roads contract for the supply and delivery of bulk bitumen for roadworks throughout the State has been awarded jointly to BP Australia Limited and Shell Company of Australia Limited.

Transport Minister Eric Charlton said BP had been contracted for the supply and delivery of up to 6,223 tonnes of bitumen at an estimated cost of $2.71 million for the Great Southern, South-West, Gascoyne and Goldfields-Esperance regions.

Shell had been contracted for the supply and delivery of up to 5,596 tonnes of bitumen at an estimated cost of $2.35 million for the Mid-West, Wheatbelt south and metropolitan regions.

The bulk bitumen for the Perth roadworks would be provided from the company's refinery at North Fremantle and storage facilities at Port Hedland and Broome for the Pilbara and Kimberley regions.

The supply and delivery contract was for a period of six months.
