A CD-ROM featuring Western Australia's marine life has won a national education award.
Marine Life in Western Australia was awarded the Educational/Resource Science/Technology Multimedia Award presented by the Australian Teachers of Media Association (ATOM) in Melbourne recently.
The disc was produced by the Department of Conservation and Land Management, Marine Education Society of Australasia and the University of Western Australia's DUIT Multimedia, in association with the WA Museum.
Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes said the ATOM awards were highly significant in terms of their prestige and the exposure winners gained throughout the various education sectors. The awards were for film, television and multimedia presentations and this year attracted 530 titles in 26 categories.
Marine Life in Western Australia was released in March this year as part of a three-phase project to encourage the community to be more involved in caring for WA's marine ecosystems.
Other parts of the project are an innovative monitoring program being developed by the CALM and the Australian Marine Conservation Society of WA, and a community-based training program to educate community groups on implementing locally-based marine monitoring activities.
Mrs Edwardes said the community monitoring program would enable members of the public to assist conservation agencies in gathering information about the State's marine environment.
The initiatives are part of the State Government's New Horizons in Marine Conservation and Management Strategy.
Mrs Edwardes said WA's 12,500km of coastline had a wide variety of distinctive marine life and ecosystems and the State Government was committed to establishing a world-class marine conservation reserve system in consultation with local communities.
Copies of the new CD-Rom are available from CALM's WA Naturally shop in Henry Street, Fremantle.
