Finance Minister Max Evans today appealed to all Western Australians to contribute generously to the St Vincent de Paul Society's annual Christmas appeal.

Speaking at the official launch of the appeal at St Mary's Cathedral this morning, Mr Evans said the appeal was worthy of everyone's support.

"The St Vincent de Paul Society is a lay Catholic organisation autonomous from the church and universal in its work," he said.

"It provides help to those who seek it regardless of race, colour or creed.

"In terms of material assistance, it provides more help than any other organisation in Australia, but its material assistance is always accompanied by personal support.

"The society's unshakeable commitment to visiting the poor in their homes is the quality that takes it far beyond the realm of being merely a fundraiser.

"As a lay organisation, most of whose members have their own busy work and family lives to deal with, the achievement of visiting and helping some 70,000 people a year is outstanding.

"That is the kind of personal commitment which should encourage all Western Australians to contribute to this Christmas Appeal.

"As well as direct assistance to families and individuals, the society works with Aborigines, particularly in the Kimberley, and provides accommodation and other support for migrants, refugees and homeless men.

"It has recently expanded its activities to include accommodation and support for people with mental health problems.

"The Lotteries Commission has been a willing supporter of the society's work and, although it is not directly connected to the Christmas Appeal, I am happy to announce today that the commission has agreed to contribute $18,400 towards furniture and facilities for a five-bedroom house for people with psychiatric difficulties.

"The society is run entirely by volunteers and in my opinion - an opinion shared by most, if not all, of my Government colleagues - the quality of its people and its work is one of the true strengths of our community.

"At this time of year when many people are moved to offer something to others who are in need, I can say with absolute confidence that the St Vincent de Paul Society is an ideal vehicle to transfer your generosity to those who need it.

"To quote the society's own Mission Statement, its members work with the poor 'by respecting their dignity, sharing our hope, and encouraging them to take control of their own destiny'.

"The society's Christmas Appeal deserves the attention of all Western Australians and in officially launching the appeal, I encourage all to think seriously about making a generous contribution."
