Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes today announced that she had approved $9,450 capital funding for the East Cannington Out-of-School Child Care Centre.

The centre offers care for children before school, after school and during school holidays for primary school students.

Children who attend primary schools at Gibbs Street, Beckenham, Cannington, St. Joseph's and Queens Park use the centre.

Mrs Edwardes said the centre's management committee had expanded its services this year to meet family needs.

"The committee carefully reviewed the needs of local families and found that pre-primary and year one students needed special help," she said.

"As a result, the centre added an innovative 'transition program' to help them adjust to the new school environment."

The centre operates from Western House in the grounds of Gibbs Street Primary School, a house bequeathed to the City of Canning for community use by a local farmer.

The new funds will be used to build a toilet block next to the centre.
