Casuarina Prison will tomorrow (Wednesday, July 21) take possession of a unique lead-light window created by prisoners at Riverbank Prison.
Justice Minister Peter Foss said the window would be given pride of place in the prison chapel.
"The window is over a metre in diameter and depicts the dove of peace and the olive branch of reconciliation," Mr Foss said.
The Minister said up to eight medium-security prisoners at Riverbank were taking part in a new program that would see them graduate with an accredited TAFE certificate in lead-lighting and stained glass.
Prison industrial officer Steve Adams and University and TAFE art lecturer, Zoy Crizzle, are coordinating the program, which takes prisoners through beginner, intermediate and skilled levels.
"It will take a prisoner about 150 hours to progress through all levels of the program," Mr Foss said.
"At the end of the course they will have the professional skills to establish their own enterprises on release from prison.
"Already they have been creating excellent examples of contemporary mirrors, which will be exhibited at the Prison Art Exhibition at the Central Metropolitan College of TAFE in Northbridge in November."
