Censorship Minister Cheryl Edwardes said today she would allow the film 'Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan supermasochist' to be screened as part of the upcoming REVelation Film Festival.
Mrs Edwardes said she made the decision following the Commonwealth Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) yesterday determining an 'R' classification should apply to the film.
The Minister also received advice from the Western Australian Censorship Advisory Committee.
"While the 'R' classification means that viewing is restricted to people 18 years and over, I remind people that the film is confronting and contains scenes of genital mutilation and infliction of pain," Mrs Edwardes said.
The Minister said her initial decision to refuse classification of the film was not taken lightly.
She said her decision was made following a discussion about the film's content with the nation's Chief Censor, who had seen the film. At that time the film had not been submitted to the OFLC for classification.
