Minister for Community Development and the Family Roger Nicholls has invited the City of Cockburn to join with his department in the construction at Jandakot of a new-style jointly funded community centre with a special emphasis on family and children's services.

Mr Nicholls outlined the proposal in a letter to the city in which he said the idea behind the new centre would be to provide the community with a wide range of facilities which would continue to be valuable as the age range of families changed.

By combining the resources of the Department for Community Development with those of local authorities, it was possible to create better value for ratepayers and taxpayers alike.

Details of each centre would be determined in discussions between council and the department in order to meet agreed priorities.

Mr Nicholls said that tenders for the new-style centres had already been accepted by the City of Canning at Canning Vale and the City of Wanneroo at Merriwa.

He said Jankdakot had been identified as a site for a new centre as a result of a needs analysis conducted by the Department for Community Development.

"No firm decision regarding such a facility can be made until the council has considered the merits of my proposal and assessed its own priorities," Mr Nicholls said.

"However, I hope the council accepts my invitation to jointly fund a community centre in Jandakot."
