One of the Bunbury region's historic 'settlers cottages' is to have its unique heritage values preserved.

Heritage Minister Richard Lewis said the Clifton Residence in Shenton Street, Rathmines, would be placed on the State Government's permanent Register of Heritage Places.

The Minister said the weatherboard and iron cottage was built in 1924, but had links to the region stretching back to the 1860s.

"The cottage was built on former farm land originally owned by Reverend Joseph Withers, who arrived in Bunbury in 1864 and developed the Rathmines area," Mr Lewis said.

"It was built of untreated local hardwood and consisted of four main rooms.

"The layout is typical of many timber-framed houses in the South-West, originating from the standard Settlers Cottages sold by the Whittaker Bros. timber merchants from the turn of the century."

Mr Lewis said the current owner, Miss Ethel Clifton, had lived in the house since her family moved in on October 8, 1924.

Arriving by wagon, the family's bedding had been soaked by rain, so they stayed the first night at a next door house.

Mr Lewis said the Clifton Residence had very high historical values.

"The home illustrates the development of the Australian style of house as well as the Rathmines area," he said.

"It is also linked to Reverend Withers, a pioneer of the Rathmines area, and the region's subsequent growth and development.

"The Clifton Residence is also part of a remarkable and diverse collection of timber structures in the City of Bunbury.

"These timber structures, reflecting the popularity of the South-West hardwoods, include houses, bridges and jetties."

Mr Lewis said the building was rare because it had remained relatively unchanged since construction.  He said it was in very good condition for its age and had a high degree of authenticity.

He said the building was also significant because it formed an important part of a picturesque local townscape.

"This area includes St Patrick's Anglican Church and churchyard, built around 1910," Mr Lewis said.

"The Clifton Residence also has high social value because of its long association with the local community.

"The cottage contributes strongly to the Rathmines community's sense of place and is highly valued by that community."
