Closure of area round South Muiron Island to fishing will protect marine life
23/12/94
Local marine life and the aquatic habitat around part of South Muiron Island near Exmouth will be protected as a result of closing the area to fishing.
Fisheries Minister Monty House said today the area was only the north-western tip of the island (one nautical mile by half a nautical mile) but would help the local environment and promote ecotourism.
"The two Muiron Islands have spectacular coral reefs and a wide range of species including snapper, trevally, coral trout, and several cod species which can be hand fed by scuba divers," Mr House said.
"Manta rays also swim there to be defouled by cleaner wrasse and green and loggerhead turtles breed on the island's beaches.
"Since the Ningaloo Marine Park has been attracting more visitors, adjacent areas have also become popular, with Exmouth charter operators taking dive tours to the Muiron Islands.
"Potato cod is one species in the closed area which has increasing interest among visitors who have come to watch the annual migration of whale sharks."
The Exmouth Gulf recreational fishing sub-committee, which involves members of the local diving clubs and the Exmouth Professional Fisherman's Association, support the protection of the potato cod and the closed fishing area.
The move also has the backing of the Exmouth Shire Council, the Coral Coastal Parks Advisory Committee and the WA Fishing Industry Council.
