Arts Minister Peter Foss today launched the Coalition Government's Buying Art and Craft Policy at Art99 in Fremantle.

Cabinet endorsed the policy last year which stated that public authorities should consider purchasing art and craft that is locally produced, of good quality, and relevant to Western Australia for building refurbishments, fit-outs and protocol gifts.

"The opportunity to showcase Western Australian art in reception foyers sends a clear message to visitors that we have excellent quality work to offer and that we are proud of it," Mr Foss said.

"The Buying Art and Craft Policy supports local small businesses - which is a stated policy commitment of the Coalition - and if artworks are purchased wisely, they may increase in value as well as adding to our cultural heritage.

"Experience shows they need be no more expensive than mass produced imported products.

"I know that aesthetically more pleasing and interesting artworks can contribute to a pleasant work environment for visitors and staff."

Mr Foss said artworks could also reinforce corporate messages.

"Fisheries WA purchased work with a marine theme, Alinta Gas commissioned a table with a flame appearing underneath, and Aboriginal Affairs showcases Aboriginal art and craft from around the State.

"The launch of the Buying Art and Craft Policy at Art99 provides a great opportunity for State Government agencies to see the variety and depth of art and craft available in Western Australia on show in one place at one time."

To implement the Minister's initiative, a Preferred Providers' List of qualified consultants and galleries has been established. Those on the list have a professional knowledge of quality WA art and craft and the ability to source suitable items for Government departments.
