Premier Richard Court today said that the decision by Senator Noel Crichton-Browne to retire from Federal politics at the next Federal election was a decision taken in the best interests of the Liberal Party and his family.

"Senator Crichton-Browne had made this unselfish decision following discussions with his family, party members and myself," Mr Court said.

"It is critical for the long-term interests of the State of Western Australia that the Federal Coalition win the next Federal election.  Senator Crichton-Browne recognised this electoral imperative and placed the interests of WA ahead of his own personal political interests.

"This matter has also been a very personal issue for the Senator's family and it was important that it be resolved in a dignified manner.

"Mrs Crichton-Browne in particular handled this whole issue in recent weeks with dignity and personal courage under tremendous pressure and I hope that she and her children are now allowed to have their privacy respected."
