Local Government Minister Paul Omodei said that yesterday's poll results would end the amalgamation process in Geraldton and Northam as far as the present Government was concerned.
The results were emphatic and would be accepted.
Both Greenough, which had a postal ballot, and Northam Shire, which had an attendance poll, had outstanding voter turnouts and he congratulated electors in both shires for their participation.
"I hope this level of interest is sustained in the council elections in May," Mr Omodei said.
Northam Shire had a 74 per cent turnout with 1,591 people voting against amalgamation with the Town of Northam and 89 in favour.
A 63 per cent vote at Greenough resulted in about 90 per cent voting against amalgamation with the City of Geraldton.
