Construction of berths and moorings is about to start at the Exmouth boat harbour.

Transport Minister Eric Charlton announced today that John Holland Engineering and Construction had been awarded the $1.9 million contract for the construction of eight trawler pens, 18 charter boat pens, the service wharf and two boat ramp walkways.

Mr Charlton said contracts would soon be awarded for the recreational pens, road works and services.

The breakwater and basin had been completed and the entrance channel dredging would be completed early next month.

"This project will be of enormous benefit to the Exmouth community, particularly the fishing, tourism and other local industries and businesses," the Minister said.

"The new harbour will provide another safe haven for boats and excellent facilities for the increasing number of visitors to the North-West looking for recreational boating opportunities."

Mr Charlton said the project had been a co-operative effort between the State Government, the Shire of Exmouth and local industry.
