Construction worth more than $120 million is under way or planned in Joondalup City.
Lands Minister Doug Shave said a LandCorp review found projects worth $38 million were under way, $82 million were planned and $25 million had recently been completed.
"Strong commitment from home buyers, small business, investors and Government organisations will see Joondalup go from strength to strength," Mr Shave said.
Current work includes the first residential hotel in the Central Business District (CBD), a $5 million mid-market Country Inns and Suites project by Carlson hotel. Country Inns and Suites is part of the US-based Carlson Hospitality Worldwide, other brands of which include Regent Hotels International and Radisson Hospitality Worldwide.
The hotel will be on part of a 9.3ha site sold by LandCorp for $1.9 million to a Wanneroo investment group. The site on the corner of Boas Avenue and Grand Boulevard is a gateway to the CBD. The remainder will cater for residential units, shops, cafes, a tavern and commercial suites to be developed in stages at an expected total cost of approximately $15 million.
"Work is also under way on a new $11 million aquatic centre which will make Arena Joondalup the largest multi-purpose sporting complex in WA," Mr Shave said.
Other current projects include:

      • an $11 million Target store in the Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City;
      • a $6 million Harvey Norman electrical and furniture complex;
      • a $6 million Brightwater Care facility next to the Joondalup Health Campus (Brightwater Care is known internationally for its aged care innovation);
      • a St John Ambulance depot with six ambulances and first aid training facilities;
      • a $3.2 million pub, reception centre, commercial and residential unit development on Reid Promenade; and -
      • a $1.25 million three-showroom development opposite Lakeside Shopping City.

Planned projects include a $25 million health and science building on the Edith Cowan University campus to open in 2001 and the $35 million Police Academy which will be operational by then.
Recently completed projects include the $16 million Greater Union Senstadium cinema complex, a $9 million addition to West Coast College of TAFE, and the $2.5 million Lotteries House, a joint initiative by the Lotteries Commission and City of Joondalup.
"The continuing arrival of well-known commercial names and the addition of new services is an indication of the maturity of Joondalup," Mr Shave said.
