Family and Children's Services is to continue funding the Sudbury Community House, Mirrabooka, allowing the centre to carry on benefiting the community.

Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes announced today that an agreement had been signed with the service, which guaranteed it $72,930 a year until June 30, 1998.

Mrs Edwardes said the centre was an excellent place for family and community members, especially those who were isolated, offering them among other things practical assistance, information and group activities.

"The centre helps anyone in the community, but in particular those who have young children and feel lonely or are socially disadvantaged in some way or another," she said.

"It is a valuable resource for parents who have specific problems. Informal counselling and advice are available.

"There is also help for families and individuals dealing with crises so they can cope with daily life positively.

"Families are supported in a variety of ways. There is advice and support available on how to start a community group and information on community support groups and activities that will help them deal with the challenges of their daily lives.

"All of which help to take some of the stresses out of daily living for those who may feel life is difficult for them."

Mrs Edwardes said she believed the agreement marked the start of a good relationship which would benefit the local community.

This funding of services would enable the agency to provide programs and courses to meet the needs of local residents.
