Contract let for building further section of Perth-Bunbury Hwy
23/12/95
Transport Minister Eric Charlton today announced the awarding of a $4.5 million contract to Boral Contracting Pty Ltd to build a further 12.7 kilometres of second carriageway on the Perth-Bunbury Highway.
Mr Charlton said the work would be carried out north of the Myalup Beach Road in the Shire of Harvey and included the construction associated drainage works and a new bridge over the Harvey Diversion Drain.
"Overtaking opportunities are currently limited on this heavily trafficked section of road and the works are expected to improve road safety markedly," he said.
The contract was made possible under the Government's Additional Funding Program and continues on from the 7.7-kilometre Binningup section recently opened to traffic and funded from the same program.
Mr Charlton said the work formed part of the overall project to construct a dual carriageway between Perth and Busselton and improve access to the South-West region of the State.
Work on the project was expected to begin early January 1996 and be completed in eight months. The southern section of works incorporating the bridge should be completed and opened to traffic prior to winter, 1996.
