Transport Minister Eric Charlton has awarded a Main Road contract to SMEC Australia Pty Ltd to prepare proposals for a master plan for the Fremantle Eastern Bypass in Hamilton Hill.

The contract is for $367,258 and on the proposed section from High Street to Rollinson Road.

Mr Charlton said as part of the contract, SMEC would also undertake a planning study for the southern connection of the bypass to the existing and proposed road networks and for public liaison for the project.

"The Fremantle Eastern Bypass comprises the construction of a four-lane dual carriageway separated by a median strip and a dual use path from High Street Fremantle, to Rollinson Road Hamilton Hill for a distance of 3.5 kilometres," the Minister said.

The Minister said the bypass would substantially reduce traffic flow on major roads in Fremantle, White Gum Valley, Beaconsfield and Hamilton Hill.

"A dual use path on the eastern side of the carriageway will enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety," he said.

Mr Charlton said work on the bypass, financed from the Government's Additional Road Funding program would start in 2000.
