The Collie power station will be officially secured for the State when a formal contract-signing ceremony is held on Saturday, April 23.

Energy Minister Colin Barnett said a ceremonial signing would take place between SECWA and consortium Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) and Itochu Corporation to commit to the size, design and costs as well as construction and operation timetable of the 300 megawatt power station.

Mr Barnett, who will cut short his visit to China to attend the signing ceremony, said representatives from ABB in Switzerland and Itochu in Japan had been invited to attend the ceremony.

Following the exchange of letters of agreement, a contract was being finalised according to a new construction timetable to enable the official signing to take place.

The Government has accelerated the project's timetable by one year to enable the power station to be commissioned in December 1998.  Detailed engineering design will commence in November this year, with on-site works due to start in the final quarter of next year.
