This Sunday's one-day clash between the Western Warriors and the Victorian Bushrangers in the Goldfields would be a win for everyone involved, Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore said today.
It was the second chance in 12 months for cricket lovers to see the Sheffield Shield champions, the Western Warriors, in action at Cruickshank Sports Arena.
Mr Moore said the cricket match was further evidence that various sports in Western Australia were taking advantage of the State Government's Country Sport Enrichment Scheme.
The scheme was a Ministerial initiative which had also brought the Western Australia-Tasmania interstate football clash to the Goldfields earlier this year and the cricket game last September between the Warriors and the South Australian Redbacks.
"The Victorian Bushrangers will be excellent opponents and I am delighted for regional cricket lovers that the Country Sport Enrichment Scheme is delivering top-class sport on a regular basis," Mr Moore said.
"The Warriors are one of WA's most successful teams, taking out back-to-back Sheffield Shields, and it is of great personal satisfaction to me that regional cricket lovers will get to see their heroes in action.
"There is something special about cricket in the country and I am sure the event will be supported by people from around the Goldfields and beyond."
Mr Moore said that under the scheme, $150,000 was available each year to help sports take their stars to the country and for country areas to attract major sporting events.
"One of the key aims of this State Government program is to expose country people to top-class sport -- and these matches in Kalgoorlie are an example of that," he said.
The Minister said other country centres could be assured that their turn would come.
The Country Sport Enrichment Scheme has now supported a wide range of sports, including soccer, football, tennis, netball, basketball, soaring, karting, swimming and athletics.
