Recognising the synergy between the waste reduction needs of some industries and the production needs of others has won a Western Australian composting company the inaugural 1999 State Recycling and Waste Reduction Recycling Industry Award.
Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes recently announced that Custom Compost had won the prestigious award as part of the 1999 State Recycling and Waste Reduction Awards.
Mrs Edwardes acknowledged Custom Compost as a leader in the recycling and waste reduction industry.
"Custom Compost has spent considerable time and resources researching the link between waste management and recycling, and sustainable agriculture," she said.
"This has resulted in a high quality business currently supplying approximately 600 tonnes of compost per week for a range of agricultural uses."
Custom Compost operates from a 400ha property located in the Shire of Murray and co-exists with Wandalup Farms - one of the State's large, intensive piggeries.
The company manages the piggery operations' waste, which along with organic waste products from other sites is used to produce compost.
This unique relationship allows Wandalup Farms to concentrate on core business and created a viable business stream for Custom Compost.
Mrs Edwardes said the composting operation generated broad community benefits.
"Organics recycling has made a significant contribution to maintaining the State's clean, green horticulture image on the world market," she said.
"Organisations like the City of Mandurah send greenwaste to the Wandalup Farms and Custom Compost site, therefore diverting it from landfill."
Custom Compost also produces specialist compost for commercial mushroom growing and recycles waste from Western Australian mushroom farms, which has encouraged the mushroom industry to invest in Western Australia.
Mrs Edwardes said Custom Compost was continually looking to the future and ongoing research was being used to develop new markets.
"The company is currently pursuing options to provide environmentally responsible solutions to major metropolitan waste products such as poultry manure, wool scours and greenwaste," she said.
"It is this commitment to finding new solutions to our waste product challenges that has seen Custom Compost recognised with this inaugural recycling industry award."
The 1999 State Recycling and Waste Reduction Recycling Industry Award was proudly sponsored by National Foods Masters Dairy. It was one of nine 1999 State Recycling and Waste Reduction Awards announced recently.
