DOLA produces biggest and most detailed street map of Perth ever made

The biggest and most detailed street map of Perth ever made has been produced by the Department of Land Administration (DOLA).

The 5m x 3m map, which covers the area stretching from Two Rocks and Chittering in the north to Mandurah and Dwellingup in the south, was unfurled today by Lands Minister Doug Shave and Emergency Services Minister Kevin Prince.

"This once-off map is made up of the 18 separate metro maps produced by DOLA and marks the completion of this series of individual maps," Mr Shave said.

The metro maps double the area covered by the current StreetSmart Perth street directory.

"The metro maps give detailed information on 9,000sqkm of Perth and its environs and is the first time this whole area has been mapped in such detail," Mr Shave said.

Mr Prince said that accurate maps were an essential tool for the State's Fire and Emergency Services authorities.

"The metro maps were originally produced to meet the needs of emergency services operating at the edges of the metropolitan area," he said.

"The Emergency Services, including the Fire and Rescue Service, Bush Fires Service and the State Emergency Service, rely on DOLA maps and directories for accurate and detailed information in responding to calls for assistance. In emergencies, finding a location quickly can be the difference between life and death."

The biggest ever map of Perth includes 25,000 streets in 359 suburbs and localities and gives details of the locations of:-

·      1,606 telephone boxes;

·      1,581 parks and ovals;

·      800 schools;

·      91 retirement communities and homes;

·      95 post offices (and agencies);

·      67 police stations;

·      65 libraries;

·      36 fire stations; and -

·      32 local government areas.
