Darryl McKenna wins (air-conditioning) Apprentice of the Year award
7/7/95
Minister for Works Kevin Minson tonight named 20-year-old Darryl McKenna from Lesmurdie, winner of an Apprentice of the Year award.
The award, organised by the Western Australian branch of the Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors' Association, recognised the achievements of refrigeration, mechanical services and sheetmetal apprentices who completed their three-year apprenticeship in 1994.
Mr Minson said it was important to recognise and encourage excellence in the air-conditioning industry.
"When you consider that up to a third of the total construction cost of new non-residential buildings, for example an office complex, is spent on air-conditioning and mechanical services, the importance of well-trained, knowledgeable people is clear," Mr Minson said.
Mr McKenna completed his apprenticeship in the refrigeration area, studying at the Carlisle campus of TAFE whilst working for Satchwell Control Systems. His prize for being named an Apprentice of the Year include computer equipment worth $3,000.
Daniel Peck, of Mandurah and Brock Allan, of Marmion, both received Certificates of Achievement.
Mr Minson congratulated the winners and praised the awards for encouraging excellence within the industry.
