Premier Richard Court says he is saddened by the tragic loss of life earlier today aboard the HMAS Westralia.

Mr Court said his thoughts were with the families of the four crew members who had died and with those currently recovering at St John of God Hospital in Murdoch.

"The death of any serviceman or woman is a tragedy, but death during peacetime as in the Blackhawk disaster and today's accident aboard the HMAS Westralia is often more difficult to comprehend. We do not expect it," Mr Court said.

"I am sure the Navy is well able to deal with this terrible accident, but should the State Government be able to provide any assistance it will be immediately forthcoming."
