Decision on maximum fine for demolishing hotel facade welcomed
27/3/95
Heritage Minister Richard Lewis said today he was pleased that the District Court had finally handed down sentence for the demolition of the Railway Hotel facade in Barrack Street.
Mr Lewis said the decision by Judge Hammond to impose the maximum $10,000 fine reinforced the seriousness of the offence.
"This should be seen as a warning to other builders that they must abide by the conditions placed on heritage buildings or be prepared to face the consequences," he said.
The Minister said the additional conditions imposed by Judge Hammond in relation to work at the Railway Hotel site ensured that the restoration would be completed by November 22, 1995.
"I believe there is sufficient incentive for Mr Scaffidi to complete the desired restoration work in the time-frame set down," he said.
"Today's decision is also a victory for adjoining landholders who have been frustrated by the delays to work commencing on site.
"It also means the State Government's plans to rejuvenate Barrack Street as part of its initiative 'Perth - A City for People' will not be hampered by further delays to the restoration of the Railway Hotel facade."
