Denmark high school additions officially opened
24/5/94
Education Minister Norman Moore today officially opened additions to the Denmark District High School worth nearly $1.3 million.
Mr Moore said the upgrading of the school would provide a better working environment for both students and staff.
Denmark District High school, which accommodated 683 students from pre-primary to Year 10, was made mostly of weatherboard buildings, with some facilities considered inadequate by modern standards.
Prior to the current project the school had not had any major additions for 22 years.
"I commend the Denmark community for the interest in the project and the input many people made," the Minister said.
"This sort of community spirit is a great credit to people in the region."
The additions, which included a new art/craft room, an undercover assembly area and new administration facilities, were funded by the State ($586,000) and Commonwealth ($680,000) Governments.
The science and home economics rooms were upgraded, a transportable room installed for manual arts, and extra toilets built for staff and students.
In addition, $50,000 was allocated towards the cost of a rammed earth band room, built in 1992, by the P and C Association.
The contractor for the project was Wauters Enterprises and it was managed by the Building Management Authority.
School principal Mr Peter Mallabone said that environmental attractions had made Denmark a growing community and enrolments at the school had been increasing for a number of years.
The new additions offered a much better range of facilities for students and, with funds provided for landscaping, it was now also a more attractive school.
