Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today released details about the future of the Woodman Point Recreation Camp at Munster.

Mr Moore said that applicants for a long-term lease would be invited from interested parties for the management and operation of the Ministry of Sport and Recreation's camp.

Situated on a 'C' Class reserve, the former Woodman Point Quarantine Station has been run as a recreation camp by the Ministry since 1980.

Mr Moore said the camp was used mainly by school and community groups and there would be strict conditions governing the lease to ensure that it remained available and accessible to them.

"The Government wants to see an injection of new ideas and development in the running of the camp so that more people in the community can take advantage of the camp," he said.

The decision to call for applications comes in the wake of the adoption last year of the Recreation Camps and Reserves Board's strategic marketing plan which will see camps upgraded or returned to the owners, the Department of Conservation and Land Management.

Mr Moore emphasised that any changes must take environmental factors into account.

"The Government will ensure that the camp's heritage is protected," he said.

"The camp has a heritage listing, and a conservation plan has been drawn up which the lessee will be required to follow.

"As well, the management of the camp must remain sensitive to the conservation and recreational attributes of the surrounding reserve, as well as the nearby Shoalwater Island Marine Park."

Mr Moore said advertisements would soon be published calling for applications for the lease of the Woodman Point Recreation Camp and the successful applicant would be known by the end of the year.
