Working as part of a team, challenging activities and building self-confidence are all part of a Government-subsidised, State-wide youth program during the coming school holidays.

Family and Children's Services Minister Rhonda Parker said today that about 50 organisations would receive funds to run youth development holiday programs for young people of high school age.

The Youth Development Holiday Program helps build confidence, self-respect and trust in others through a range of indoor and outdoor activities.

"Young people are encouraged to develop skills through challenges such as rock climbing, abseiling, horse riding, sailing, circus acts and a variety of sports and team games," Mrs Parker said.

"Other activities include programs in personal development, budgeting, healthy lifestyles and self-discipline."

The Minister said the programs gave young people the chance to take part in activities they would otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in.

"The activities have to be fun but they always have a greater purpose," she said.

"The $50,000 funding for the January program demonstrates Family and Children's Services' commitment to supporting young Western Australians and their families."
