Discovery of Geryon 1 gas well in Carnarvon Basin welcomed

Mines Minister Norman Moore said he was delighted to learn that West Australian Petroleum had made a significant gas discovery with the Geryon 1 well in deep water in the Carnarvon Basin, off the north-west coast of Western Australia.
"Geryon 1 is about 190km north of Onslow and 40km to the north-west of the existing Gorgon gas field," Mr Moore said.
"It is the first exploration well in WA 267-P, an exploration permit operated by WAPET."
Geryon 1 was drilled to a total depth of 3,543m and encountered three gas zones containing good quality sands, with a total net pay of 113m.
Mr Moore said these latest results looked promising for the State's gas industry.
"Preliminary estimates suggest that the field contains a world-class gas resource," he said.
"Geryon potentially provides an additional large gas reserve base, boosting the resource base of the existing nearby Gorgon area gas fields.
"This further demonstrates the prospectivity of deep water prospects in the southern part of the Carnarvon Basin."
Last year, the North West Shelf produced more than $4 billion worth of gas.
