Respected educationalist Dr Robert Vickery - a former Director General of the State Department of Education - has received a new appointment.

Dr Vickery has been appointed as chairman of the Western Australian Higher Education Council, to replace Professor Gordon Stanley, who has taken up a Commonwealth posting.

Education Minister Norman Moore said today that Dr Vickery had excellent qualifications for the new position.

The Higher Education Council was an advisory body to the Minister on tertiary education matters, and included the Vice Chancellors of all the Universities, the heads of the Education Department and the Department of Training, and representation from industry.

"Dr Vickery's considerable experience in the higher education sector will ensure that I am kept up to date with the many issues and changes relating to tertiary education in this State," Mr Moore said.

"I look forward to his valuable input in helping to determine on-going Government policy and in assisting with State and Federal Government planning."

Dr Vickery was chair of the Review of Education and Training, submitted to the Minister in July 1993, and which provided the blueprint for a major restructuring of the Education, Employment and Training portfolios.

He was also a former director of the Nedlands College of Advanced Education, and a professor at Florida State University.

A former member of the University of WA Senate, Dr Vickery was also a former director of the Academy of Performing Arts, a member of the Council of the WA College of Advanced Education and a member of the Australian Curriculum Corporation.

Mr Moore also announced the appointment of senior Education Department executive, Peter Browne, as acting chief executive officer of the State Education Policy and Co-ordination Bureau.

This post was also held by Professor Stanley, who was going to Canberra to take up the position of chair of the Federal Government's Higher Education Council.
